Educated at the London School of Economics, Jonathan has been a foreign correspondent, media adviser, and consultant on African political, economic and social systems for more than 20 years.

He is currently Africa correspondent of The (London) Times, based in Johannesburg. Before that he was Africa Bureau Chief for the Reuters News Agency.

He has also worked extensively for the United Nations and NATO - as media relations and public policy consultant to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, as press advisor to the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN Habitat and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and as Editor in Chief of the UN’s IRIN humanitarian information service.

Jonathan was nominated by The Times for Reporter of the Year, Foreign News, in the annual UK Press Awards in 2002-3 and 2003-4.
